5 Things You May Not Know About Your Dog

5 Things You May Not Know About Your Dog

You probably already know your dog is amazing—but it turns out, they’re even more incredible than you think. In honour of National Pet Month, we’re celebrating our four-legged companions with five surprising facts about your pooch. Let’s dive in!

1. Dogs have a secret third eyelid

Did you know dogs have three eyelids?
The third is called the nictitating membrane, and it acts like a built-in shield, protecting their eyes from dirt, dust, and injury. It's one of the many ways nature helps keep our pups safe and healthy.

2. Dogs can understand hundreds of words and gestures

Dogs aren't just good listeners—they're surprisingly smart, too.
Most dogs can understand up to 250 words and gestures with the right training. Some exceptionally clever pups can even learn over 1,000! It’s just one more reason to keep talking to them—they really are paying attention.

3. Dogs are experts at reading emotions

Dogs are incredibly skilled at picking up on human emotions. We probably all felt it at some point!  By observing our body language, listening to our tone of voice, and even detecting subtle changes in our scent, dogs can sense when we’re happy, stressed, or sad. It's why they always seem to know when you need a little extra comfort.

4. Dogs can detect cancer

One of the most extraordinary talents dogs have is their ability to detect diseases—including certain types of cancer. With training, dogs can identify changes in body chemistry that even medical tests might miss. Their powerful sense of smell makes them real-life superheroes in the world of healthcare.

5. Some songs have special sounds only dogs can hear

Music isn't just for humans. In The Beatles’ song "A Day In The Life," there's a hidden high-frequency sound that only dogs can hear. Next time you play it, watch your dog's reaction—you might just catch them tuning into their very own private concert.

Let’s celebrate our pets

This National Pet Month, and every month, our dogs deserve a little extra love for all the loyalty, joy, and companionship they bring into our lives. Whether it’s an extra treat, a new toy, or just more time together, it’s the perfect moment to celebrate everything that makes your dog so special.
